The Science Teachers Association of Nigeria  (STAN) was established in 1957. It is a non-political, non-religious and non-profit oriented professional association with the following aims:

  • To promote co-operation among the Science Teachers in Nigeria with a view to raising the standard of science education in the country
  • To provide a forum for discussion by science teachers on matters of common interest• To help science teachers keep in touch with development in science and its application to industry and commerce
  • To popularize science
  • To co-operate with and affiliate to other societies and bodies with related interests; and
  • To do or perform such other functions incidental to or necessary for the realization of these objectives

The Association is organized into 36 state branches and the Federal Capital Territory Branch in Abuja. Each branch organizes its own activities with the supervision of the national secretariat to suit local needs. The association also has fifteen subject panels and each year national workshops are organized by all the subject panels. The panel workshops are rotated among the various states of the federationSTAN is administered by three separate but mutually supportive organs. These are the Annual General Meeting (AGM), the Governing Council and the National Executive Board. The following establishments are represented at the governing council: Education Trust Fund (ETF), Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, International Council of the Association for Science Education (ICASE), National Examination Council, National Board of Technical Education, National Commission for Nomadic Education, Nigerian Union of Teachers, Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria. Universal Basic Education Commission, National Teachers Institute, National Universities Commission, and the West African Examination Council.The Association maintains a national headquarters at The STAN PLACE, Kwali, Abuja.
